One other response to my story was an ant scientist, if I got that right, and said that from his/her (I forget which) perspective, the colony, not the individual ant, was the sentient being.

I have another colony in my back yard called bamboo. By comparison to the bamboo, the ants are very social and respectful critters indeed. The bamboo is very impolite and knows no boundaries. I am surprised that Japan is not one big bamboo forest, to be frank.
