then, from this eat-free shore
now disentangle
from feelings —
the lovely ones
the horrible ones
the neither one or
the other ones
for feelings, too, are a
thirst, deeper than hunger
deeper even than sex
when it comes right
down to it

What Descartes meant to
say was: I feel, therefore
I am — more real than thoughts
more tangible than reflections
more alive than theories, yes
these feelings bear witness
to my aliveness; when I
no longer feel, I will
no longer be — this he told
his daughter Francine who
shook her head and then
nodded her head and then
reached for pen and ink and
wrote it down lest she forget
(she was what was to be called
a scatter-brain), while her
father Rene kept pondering
pondering
pondering

Disentangling this
Gordian knot is near
impossible but even so
it is the third object
of disegoment —
sever all tendrils
let go all filaments
shed microscopic clingings
sail clear of these sirens
out and upon blue waters
into clean air strong winds
for distant feel-free shores
